Standards Based Grading
What is Standards Based Grading?
Why use Standards Based Grading?
How will Standards Based Grading Work?
Standards Based Grading Key
- Students work to master the standards rather than to accumulate points.
- Assesses what students know and are able to do in relation to the Common Core State Standards.
- Standards are reported on PowerSchool in “Kid Friendly” Language.
Why use Standards Based Grading?
- Purpose: To identify what a student knows, or is able to do, in relation to the required standards, as opposed to simply averaging grades/scores over the course of a grading period, which can mask what a student has learned, or not learned, in a subject area.
- Standards based grading better isolates specific areas in which students are making progress and, more importantly, helps teachers and students to target areas in which students need further support and assistance.
How will Standards Based Grading Work?
- Instead of an overall letter grade for math and ELA, those sections on your child’s report card will be further broken down into the essential standards that are covered in each trimester.
- For example, instead of receiving an "A" or “B” in math or ELA for the trimester, your child will receive a 1, 2, 3, or 4 for each standard that was covered during that trimester.
- Academic performance will be separated from work habits and behavior in order to provide you with a more accurate view of your child’s progress in both academic and behavioral areas.
- A student’s performance on a series of assessments (both formative and summative) will be used to determine his or her overall score in math.
- Practice assignments (homework) are just that, practice, and thus will serve primarily as a source of feedback and instructional support for both students and teachers. Students will recognize that completing homework becomes an essential part of mastering the key standards.
